The Learning Progression For Literacy - 1746 Words

The act of reading is a process that involves a complexity of cognitive processes and developmental stages. Recent research has shifted the paradigm of thinking of what range of skills serves as the foundation of literacy. Skilled readers need language development, conceptual knowledge base, and a broad vocabulary. Children must have sufficient decoding skills that are composed of smaller elements of speech known as phonological awareness and letter-sound correspondence. In addition, readers must have the ability to fluently and easily recognize these words. But to attain a high level of skills, young children need opportunities to develop these strands, not in isolation, but interactively. (Neuman, Copple, Bredekamp, 2000) The Stages of Reading Chall’s developmental stages of reading clearly define the learning progression for literacy. It is evident that language is the vital component of a reading foundation. The Pre-reading stage marks the importance of oral language development. Verbal abilities are consistently the best predictors of later reading achievement (Scarborough, 2001). This beginning stage demonstrates how the visual perceptual and cognitive processes are at work (Cunningham 2000). As the child progresses to Stage 1, the sounds are starting to make a connection with letter strings within words (grapho-phonic cues). Now the child understands what the â€Å"D† sound is representing. Leading Change Reinventing Organization Development

Question: Describe about the Leading Change for Reinventing Organization Development? Answer: As the saying goes, change is a process of life. For the betterment of life and society, change is inevitable. Every day a new change is incorporated in the life of the people; it can be in the form of technology, organizational change, and change in viewpoint and so on. The following literature review will throw light on the topic of organizational change. The process that leads to the organizational change and how the change affects the life of another individual who are related to the change will be the main topic of discussion in the literature review. Scenario The scenario presented a situation when the British Airways though of implementing certain change in the organization by introducing electronic clocking system. The main aim of the organization is to monitor the attendance of the employees, a better handling of the shift of duty timings and calculate the exact hours of overtime that the employees have worked. However, the employees were not ready to accept the change. According to the employees, it is an intentional approach to manipulating the employees hours of work and change the shift timings so that the managers have to pay less to the employees. As a way to display their dislike in the approach the employees went into a strike, that stopped the operations for 24 hours and the British Airways had to lose as many as 10,000 customers in that stretch of 24 hours. Had the employees given a thought regarding the change implemented by the authorities, the situation might not have arose which resulted in the loss of the company as well as the employees. Review 1 According to Palmer, Dunford, and Akin, any change requires five main points (Palmer, Dunford, and Akin, 2009). The leaders should be able to inject the thought in the mind of the followers that change is normal. Many employees might think change is equal to instability in the organization. It is up to the managers to make them understand that change is a part and parcel of the organization. The commitment of the employees is tested when the organization is bringing a change in the organization. Similarly, when British Airways is bringing a change in the organization it is the cooperation of the employees that the company will need the most which was not provided in the time of need (Burke, 2013). Resistance comes complimentary with change. Though British Airways has faced a lot of resistance from the part of the employees, yet the company should consider the resistance as a good sign for the development of the company. The opposition from the employees is an indication that the work force of the organization is still alive. It is the responsibility of the company to make the employees understand that it is the followers who make the change in the organization and it for the betterment of the workers that the company incorporates various changes in the organization. Hence, the workers should cooperate with the change that has been brought within the organization and work accordingly. Review 2 According to Werkmen, once a company approaches any change and development in the organization, the steps taken by the company should make a certain sense to the employees associated with the change (Werkman, 2010). The main of the article is to make the companies understand sense-making approach towards organizational development. By doing so, the company will be prepared to face the confrontation from the employees. However, it may happen the employees understand the idea behind the changes in the organization and hence, the level of confrontation from the employees may become less (Van de Ven, and Sun, 2011). In the given scenario as well, provided that the British Airways would have made the employees understand idea behind the change and incorporated sense-making approach towards the organizational development, the scenario would not have been as rough as the company has faced. Once the British Airways has incorporated more sense-making actions while bringing the change, the org anization would have been better able to handle the situation which went out of hand due to the long strike and resulted in the huge loss on the part of the company. Identifying the problems Before implementing a change, any organization should gradually bring the change rather than just implementing the change one fine morning. The organization should talk about the advantages and the disadvantages of the change that will be brought in the organization. In addition to this, the organization should talk about how to face the challenges that will arise from the change (Millar, Hind, and Magala, 2012). In this scenario, British Airways has not informed the employees regarding the change that the company is implementing; as a result, British Airways has to face the resistance from the employees. On the other hand, the employees viewed this change as a problem in the way of their work. The employees were not aware of the advantages of the change that will make the operations better and hence they protested against the company regarding the sudden change in the organization (Oakland, and Tanner, 2007). Reflections on the problem It has been seen that the change management applied by the British Airways has been hugely resulted by the employees of the organization. However, this kind of problems could well handled by the organization by educating the employees about the advantages of the following g change that have been introduced in the organization (Brown, and Harvey, 2011). Once the organization has educated the employees about the change in that is coming their way, the employees would have understood the reason behind the change tend the huge opposition would have been stopped as well as the loss that has been generated due to the opposition (Sirkin, Keenan, and Jackson, 2005). From the employees point of view as well, it was not right from the part of the employees to indulge in such an outbreak. The commitment of the employees is tested when the organization is bringing some change. Provided the employees do not support the organization at the time of need, those employees cannot be considered committ ed to the organization; hence, the employees should not expect any commitment from the organization as well. Food Idioms

Food Idioms Food Idioms Food Idioms By Maeve Maddox A universal preoccupation with food is apparent in the many idioms based on it. Here are just ten: 1. apples and oranges: two things that are inherently different or incompatible. For example, â€Å"To compare The Chronicles of Narnia to the Twilight series is to compare apples to oranges.† 2. bad apple: a negative or corrupting influence on others; a troublesome or despicable person. For example, â€Å"One official of a national motorcycle organization argued that a few bad apples shouldnt be allowed to ruin all motorcyclists reputations† 3. bring home the bacon: to bring home the prize, to achieve success. In American usage â€Å"to bring home the bacon† means â€Å"to earn the living for a household.† The expression probably originated from the custom/legend of the Dunmow Flitch. A â€Å"flitch of bacon† is a side of bacon, salted and cured. Married visitors to the town of Dunmow in Essex who knelt on two sharp stones and could swear that during the past twelvemonth they’d never quarreled with their spouse or wished themselves unmarried could claim a free flitch of bacon. Another possibility is that the expression derives from greased pig contests at county fairs. The contestant who succeeded in catching the pig â€Å"brought home the bacon.† 4. chew the fat: originally the expression meant to argue over a point, perhaps because people arguing make energetic mouth movements similar to what is required to masticate gristle. In British usage, both â€Å"chew the fat† and â€Å"chew the rag† mean to argue or grumble. In American usage, the expressions mean â€Å"to engage in friendly conversation.† 5. cream puff: literally, a cream puff is a shell of puff pastry with a cream filling. In British usage, a â€Å"cream puff† is an effeminate person. In American usage, a â€Å"cream puff â€Å"is a used car in especially good condition. 6. cup of tea: something that suits a person’s disposition The expression is used in both positive and negative contexts: â€Å"A Mozart concert? Just my cup of tea!† â€Å"A ball game? Sorry, football is not my cup of tea.† 7. a pretty/fine kettle of fish: an awkward state of affairs; a mess or a muddle. For example, â€Å"As the crisis dragged on to the eleventh month, Bishop Segun introduced a pretty kettle of fish to the whole matter when he instituted an ecclesiastical court† In researching this post, I discovered that the expression â€Å"a pretty kettle of fish† (with the meaning â€Å"a fine mess†) seems to be morphing into â€Å"a different kettle of fish† or â€Å"another kettle of fish† with the meaning â€Å"something else entirely.† For example, â€Å"Your website needs to be a whole different kettle of fish.† 8. a lemon: something that is bad or undesirable. Anything that fails to meet expectations can be called a lemon. For example, â€Å"Her first husband was a lemon.† Most often, the term is used to describe a car that has problems from its time of purchase. Individual states have â€Å"lemon laws† intended to protect consumers from substandard vehicles. The federal lemon law (the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act) was enacted in 1975 and protects citizens of all states. 9. full of beans: full of energy and high spirits. For example, this headline: â€Å"Hollins still full of beans as he settles in at Crawley Town† In current usage the expression â€Å"full of beans† is so frequently associated with children that it has been adopted as a brand name by child care centers and a children’s clothing store. I’ve always assumed that the expression derived from the idea of a frisky bean-fed horse, but recently I read that at one time beans were considered an aphrodisiac. 10. hot potato: a delicate situation that must be handled with great care. For example, this headline: â€Å"Herberts Healthy Utah Plan Could be a Political Hot Potato† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? In English Employment Law the Issue of Employment Status is Almost Essay

In English Employment Law the Issue of Employment Status is Almost Exclusively one for the Courts to Decide Upon - Essay Example The basic distinction between employee and self employed person is that employee has to serve under the employer with certain terms and conditions whereas the self employed has to work under the contractor for specific job on fixed payment. Another simple way of distinguishing employment from self employment is: a) buying an employee or b) buying a service1. Employment Tribunals Act 1996 provides the formation of employment tribunals. It comprises of judge and two lay members. Most of the times tribunals deal with the employment disputes leaving few exceptions where a judge has to sit alone2. The Tribunal can hear and decide the case if it falls within the ambit of the given acts: a) equal Pay Act 1970 breach of equality clause in contracts of employment b) employment Agencies Act 1973 application by the Secretary of State for a prohibition order c) sex discrimination Act 1975 d) race relations Act 1976 e) Section 230 (3) 19963. Employment Tribunals Regulations 2004 governs the proce dures of employment. The tribunal in question examines the nature of employment with specific reference to the relationship of an employee and the self employed. The decision of the Tribunal is binding on all stake holders. In such cases, if affected employees hire the services of a solicitor he / she have to bears the fee4. The aggrieved party can challenge the decision of lower judiciary in the Court of Appeal or in the Supreme Court as the case may be. The apex court while dealing with the employment cases frequently refers the judgments of House of Lords5. The Supreme Court can: a) affirm or set aside the impugned orders of the subordinate courts b) Order subordinate courts to retrial the case if found that the trial was not fair6. The terms that create confusion in the trials are ‘implied’ and ‘irrelevant’. Employment status is determined on the basis of actual relationship. Court has its own guidelines which prevail in the event of any dispute. One qu estion that arises is that why should the two parties be in dark over this issue for a considerable amount of time. Many workers carry on their duties under the employment status labelled on them by the employers. This goes on for months and even years. There should be a rigid framework that prevents workers from living in ignorance or being completely oblivious to the benefits they can receive from a change in their employment status7. Control Test One of the most important tests to determine the employment status is the Control Test. This test determines the manner in which the work is done8. In the ancient times most of the workers were unskilled. Now there has been a dramatic change in the labour market. Workers are skilled and have in-depth knowledge about their work as compared to their employers. As mentioned earlier, changes in the working styles of corporations and individuals have made the control test less effective in many ways. The problem multiplies when dealing with s killed workers who are not under the direct control of the employer / client, but an integral part of the organization9. Of course there are strengths and weaknesses in control test. Many factors can be considered in the physical control such as presence at work, timely completion of task and the quantity of work given to workers. But with skilled workers who decide their own pace and timing may not be under direct ‘

How Cooking Free

How Cooking Frees Men Article Essay This article explains how the discovery in cooking foods has dramatically changed the way we live, and the amount of time freed up by spending less time chewing. Raw food takes much longer to eat than soft cooked foods. The discovery of cooking changed our social division of labor between men and women. The Hadza tribes are foragers; hunters and gathers, and now that cooking food is possible, the men hunt for meat, while the women forage the land for anything edible. When the men come back to the village, the women hope they have meat or honey to provide, but if they come empty handed, the women have the food they have gathered already prepared for the hungry men. The men and women share their food with one another, their children, and extended family. Even though my family and I are not foragers, this sounds very similar to the same way I was brought up. My father would make the money that paid for the food, while my mother would stay home to raise us children and cook. She always had dinner ready for my father whether he was coming home from work or home after looking for a job. Either way, we always had food on our table. There were even summers that we had to pick fruit with my mother on farmers land so we can have canned fruit stock our pantry. We would forage in the fall walnuts that have fallen off a walnut tree on the side of some road, so she can make banana nut bread. As a child I was put to work on several occasions to help my mother, and that was not the same way my brothers were raised, they would be allowed to go hunting or fishing with my father. Even though my family and I are not foragers we have a lot of similarities with the Hadza tribe and how they divide their labor based upon gender and age. Foragers follow the method of hunter and gatherer, to collect their food. They form small communities of mainly family; immediate and extended family. The men hunt for food while the women and children forage for edible plants. The tribes join occasionally to celebrate things; and they share their food. The Hadza believed if a single man provided the meat for the day, he would divide the food with his family first, and then divide it amongst the rest of the tribesmen. Foraging may have been the way to gather food in the beginning of man (several small tribes still live as foragers, like the Hadza tribe). Today, America and many other countries use intensive agriculture; we use machinery to irrigate and fertilize to increase our surplus. This is necessary because of our population; we are not only a few like the foragers. We are primarily controlled through a government, as apposed to moving about with a village. My first impression of this article was not too great; I felt the writer discussed the difference of chew time within too much detail. I understand the concept of â€Å"less time chewing = more time†. What I found most interesting, and gained insight from, was the knowledge that cooking food to make it soft, freed up the time of man. Without that simple action of cooking our food, man would be very different today. Not just time wise, but that was the start of division of labor within a family. This is still practiced within many American families and tribes that still live off the land. I think a big difference between us and them (which there are a few tribal foragers still today), they live creating little impact on their environment, while we seem to not care so much about the harm we do to ours. I feel because of more time, we not only have the means to relax and socialize, but we also abuse it. We are not as active, and to some people their social part of life is their most important. So because of more time, people are becoming obese, lazy, and gossipy. That pretty much sums up over half of the American population.
